If you live in your RV as you travel the country, you can still have a garden, even though you are not in one place more than a few days. You can have several types of containers from decorative pots to window boxes and a bumper box to a hanging garden.
Flowers to Grow
Some herbs have pretty flowers. Grow herbs, taking what you need from part of the plants, and let the others flower. For plain flowers, grow a pot of day lilies, ice plants, flowering shrubs that like to be pruned or even certain types of roses.
Choosing the Right Flowers
Keep in mind that some plants don’t do well outside in northern climates. If you don’t have room in the RV for plants that are not evergreen and you don’t head south for the winter months, you might want to skip those plants. If you do travel to warmer climates during the cold months, then tropical plants and other plants that prefer warm climates will do well since you’ll be able to put them outside in January without worrying about them freezing.
Types of Planters
Build a planter that fits over the bumper for a long garden. If you make two that fit end to end, they’ll be easier to move and store. Keeping this one rather shallow also makes it easier to move. You can use a shallow box to grow strawberries and herbs.
Use flower pots to grow flowers and vegetables that require more room for the roots. And, use an over-the-door canvas shoe holder to grow herbs. You can hang it inside while traveling and move it outside to water the hanging garden or to let it get plenty of sun.
Vegetables to Grow
Grow fresh strawberries in a planter that needs to be relatively shallow. You’ll have fresh strawberries through the spring and early summer. You could even grow enough to make a small batch of strawberry jam or preserves.
Grow tomatoes in medium sized flower pots. Make sure the pot is wide enough to support a tomato cage. You can also grow radishes and potatoes in pots. Other vegetables that do well in pots include lettuce, beets, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and beans that don’t vine.
