Experience One of the World’s Most Unique Festivals in North Dakota

shutterstock_602032871

Taylor, North Dakota, is a small town (only 148 some folk call it home), but it plays host to perhaps one of the world’s most unique festivals each year in July. The Taylor Horse Fest is all about celebrating the horse and its special connection to those who work the land. The festival also celebrates the legacy and important role that horses have played in North Dakota and their place in history as a whole beyond the state.

Celebrated over the course of two days, the main attraction is the main street parade where both locals and visitors showcase their horses and their horse-drawn vehicles, from coaches and buggies to wagons and trailers. Riders both big and small, young and old ride horses down the street and the variety is enough to satisfy any horse lover. Besides horses, you’ll also spot the occasional donkey or mule.

Festival goers can also enjoy roadside vendor stalls, horse-related demonstrations, see a live blacksmith at work, and catch some live entertainment. There are plenty of food stalls out if you get hungry and souvenir stalls if you want a memento.

After the parade, you can head out to local fields to see practical demonstrations of how horses help people. You can watch horses help plow a field, harvest hay and transport it, and other tasks that would have been impossible without them before mechanized machinery.

There are also horse training seminars, old farm equipment exhibits, a pie social, and kid activities (like a petting zoo and amateur roping).

The festival is set to take place on July 29th and 30th this year.
