Holiday Events in Bismarck

Bismarck is full of fun and family-friendly events this holiday season. Check out any of these events to get yourself into the holiday spirit this December!

Sertoma Christmas in the Park – Through December 31

Head to Sertoma Park for a daily winter wonderland, which includes more than fifty lit Christmas displays scattered throughout the scenic park. Sartoma Christmas in the Park is in its 21st year. The display is open from 6-9pm daily and costs $10 per car. All proceeds will go to benefit various local charities in Bismarck. You can also donate non-perishable food items when you go, which will be donated to Ministry on the Margins.

If you go earlier than 6pm, you can still enjoy all the amenities the park has to offer, including picnic areas. Stroll down to the nearby Dakota Zoo afterwards!

The Christmas Angel – Through December 23

Visit the Christmas Angel at Gateway Mall Fridays from 4-6 until Christmas. Teach giving instead of getting when you donate to a child in need from the angel tree. Tell the Christmas Angel what you are excited to give this year! The greatest gift you can give your child is the understanding of human kindness.

Jesse Knutson Photography will be available for professional Christmas pictures after your visit with the Angel.

Must-Have RV Accessories

RV Seniors with GPS

RVs may come equipped with plenty of standard amenities and features, but sometimes there are certain accessories that need to be bought after you purchase your RV. These are some of the accessories that are deemed more “must-have” rather than “nice to have.”

A Good GPS

A good GPS that you can mount on your dashboard or windshield is priceless for an RVer. Sure, smartphones may come with GPS apps, but we all know we have to refer to the GPS every now and then if it’s going to work and glancing at a smartphone in a car is already distracting enough. In a big RV, it’s even more dangerous. Why risk yourself, those around you, and your RV?

Safety concerns aside, a dedicated GPS is invaluable for navigating and is more detailed and user friendly than a mere smartphone app. Do yourself a favor and invest in a good unit before you take your RV out next time.

Portable Folding RV Hammock

This one is all about comfort, but what comfort it is! Let’s admit it: hammocks are great, but they can be an inconvenience to set up and an inconvenience to pack up. A portable folding RV hammock isn’t going to take up much space on your rig and it offers all the comfort and relaxation of a regular hammock without all the fuss. Simply take it to that nice shady spot or relaxing sunbathing patch of grass and pop it open. Voila! You just took a shortcut to a great afternoon nap.

WiFi Extender

Any RV traveler will tell you that RV parks may offer that free WiFi, but it’s more often than not less than premium. A WiFi extender for your RV helps to boost a weak or distant signal and make it more usable, which comes in handy if you like to use the internet to read the news or find something to watch at breakfast.

The Tips You Need to Experience the Joy of Ice Fishing

Ice fishing season is coming up soon in North Dakota. RV travel isn’t just reserved for the summer months. In fact, winter activities are made even more enjoyable with the RV lifestyle. Ice fishing is one of those activities. Once you learn the basics of ice fishing, the sport will quickly become one of your favorite features of winter. The following simple ice fishing tips will help you get started, so you can enjoy the RV lifestyle even when the weather is cold and the lakes are frozen.

The Movement of Fish

One of the most important parts of ice fishing is understanding where fish will be and when. In shallow lakes, fish tend to move shallower later in the season. In larger, deeper lakes, fish migrate to where food and cover can be found. They tend to stay deeper where the water is warmer. Fish become less active in the heart of winter, which means they’re easier to catch when they’re moving at the beginning and end of the season.

Start with Smaller Lakes

Starting with smaller lakes at the beginning of season will help you fish more often, and ultimately become a better ice fisherman. Smaller lakes freeze more quickly, which means you can be on the ice earlier in winter.

Later in the season, move to the larger lakes, which have more oxygen. Fish are more active there.

Use Live Bait

Live bait is an essential part of ice fishing. Whether you’re dead sticking, using a bobber or jigging, live bait is the most effective way to fish. Start by jigging larger lures roughly a foot above the bottom to catch the more aggressive fish. If the fish can be seen but not caught, opt for a smaller jig.

Ice Fish with Your RV from Capital RV Center

An RV from Capital RV Center, whether it’s a motorhome or travel trailer, is an ideal way to travel from one ice fishing destination to another. Enjoy the comfort and convenience of a hot shower, comfortable seating area, television and plenty of sleeping space after a long day on the ice.

Fall Foliage Destinations in North Dakota

North Dakota doesn’t get enough credit as a fall foliage destination. If you live here in North Dakota, we don’t have to convince you of the truth in that statement. For those visiting or thinking about visiting, you’re in for a treat if you’re hoping to view some fall colors.

While there are plenty of places to view fall foliage in North Dakota, even along any stretch of interstate, there are certain locations that offer that little bit extra. In no particular order, here are a few stunning places in North Dakota to view the colorful fall foliage.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park

Named after the 26th President, Theodore Roosevelt National Park has a personal connection to Teddy. It was in North Dakota, and the area that’s now the park, that Roosevelt first found his love for the outdoors. It’s this area, in part, that prompted him to found the National Parks later in his life while he was President. Perhaps it was because of the fall foliage that he must have observed at some point during his stay. This National Park is located in the rugged North Dakota Badlands and features beautiful fall displays that are only enhanced by the ruggedness.

Turtle River State Park

Located in northeast North Dakota in Grand Forks County just north of the community of Arvilla. The Turtle River runs through the park and lends its name. Established in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps project, the park offers camping, cross-country skiiing, fishing, hiking, and mountain biking. In fall, the heavily wooded park turns into a wonderful display of color.

Cross Ranch State Park

Located in central North Dakota along the Missouri River, this 589-acre parcel of land offers hiking, boating, canoeing, cabins, and camping. The woods that run along the river bottom are awash with color by October.
